Change browser settings to view PDFs without downloading
Purpose:
This article explains how to adjust your browser settings so that PDF files open directly in the browser instead of downloading automatically.
Issue:
When you click View PDF or View Preview in the Web app, the PDF file downloads instead of displaying in your browser.
Cause:
Your browser is configured to download PDF files instead of opening them in-browser.
Solution:
Update your browser settings to open PDFs directly. Follow the steps for your browser below:
Google Chrome
Chrome uses a built-in PDF viewer. If PDFs are downloading instead of opening:
- Open Chrome.
- Click the More icon (three dots) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down and click Advanced.
- Under Privacy and security, click Site Settings.
- Scroll to Additional content settings and click PDF documents.
- Uncheck the box for “Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome.”
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox includes a built-in PDF viewer enabled by default. To check or change this:
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button and select Settings.
- Go to the General panel.
- Scroll to Applications.
- Find Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list.
- In the Action column, choose:
- Preview in Firefox to view PDFs in-browser.
- Use Adobe Reader to open PDFs in an external app.
- Save File to download PDFs instead.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer opens PDFs in-browser by default. To change this:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click the Tools icon and select Manage add-ons.
- In the Show drop-down, select All add-ons.
- Find Adobe PDF Reader (or your installed PDF viewer).
- Click the extension and select Disable to stop PDFs from opening in-browser.
To re-enable in-browser viewing, repeat the steps and click Enable.
